Vikings Stadium Bill: Jared Allen, Christian…

Read More: Jared Allen (DE – MIN), Christian Ponder (QB – MIN), Minnesota Vikings

Supporters of a bill for a new Minnesota Vikings stadium project, including Gov. Mark Dayton, spent the weekend engaged in a furious round of fourth quarter lobbying to save the plan and possibly the team’s future in the state. The Minnesota House will vote on a $1 billion compromise plan, of which the state will pay roughly $400 million through gaming revenues.

Gov. Dayton and Vikings defensive end Jared Allen, who led the NFL with 22 sacks last season, held a rally at the Mall of America on Saturday urging supporters to press their legislators to support the bill. On Monday, Vikings fans and others supporting the bill, including the state’s labor unions and representatives of the business community, will rally on the capitol lawn. Second-year quarterback Christian Ponder will be on hand for that event.

Right now, Gov. Dayton believes the bill to be a few votes shy of passage, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. That should make for one of the most watched floor debates in this year’s legislative session, as supporters and opponents twist and turn to sway a handful of voters on the fence.

Behind the scenes, an unusual alliance of business and labor leaders have taken on a more direct lobbying effort. The Governor has also met with legislative leaders to press their support.

Complicating matters is a Republican tax bill that Gov. Dayton vetoed Friday. The tax bill could return, in some form, as part of a compromise to bring in Republican votes for the stadium bill which is the Governor’s top priority for the end of this legislative session.

If the bill passes a House vote on Monday, it would then go the Senate for approval before landing on Gov. Dayton’s desk for a signature.

The Vikings’ lease on the Metrodome lapsed at the end of last season. The team will play there again in 2012, but is under no obligation to stay beyond that.

That’s all the news for today.

Dayton, Allen rally fans ahead of stadium vote

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Gov. Mark Dayton and Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen are among those rallying residents ahead of a Minnesota House vote on a new stadium agreement.

A Minneapolis Star Tribune report (http://bit.ly/KzlGaW ) says hundreds showed up at a Mall of America rally Saturday. Dayton told them he wants the team to always be the Minnesota Vikings, never the Los Angeles Vikings or Tucson Vikings.

State Sen. Julie Rosen says fans should call their legislators and tell them to support the agreement Monday. Allen directed fans to the Vikings website for instructions on contacting lawmakers.

The nearly $1 billion plan includes $427 million from the team, $150 million from Minneapolis and $398 million from the state. Critics call the deal bad for taxpayers.

Week 17 NFL Picks: CBS Sports Expects Bears To End…

Read More: Josh McCown (QB – CHI), Michael Strahan (DE – NYG), Jared Allen (DE – MIN), Jay Cutler (QB – CHI), Kahlil Bell (RB – CHI), Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings are 3-12 and without star running back Adrian Peterson heading into Week 17, but the Chicago Bears have lost five games in a row and are left with Josh McCown and Kahlil Bell to lead the offensive unit. Neither team expected to be in this situation at the end of the season, but now it’s about who can make the best of it. Bell has been running hard for the Bears, and may be looking to make a statement against the Vikings, the team that cut him before he made his way to Chicago. Meanwhile, Jared Allen needs 4.5 sacks to surpsass the NFL single-season record set by Michael Strahan. There are still some interesting aspects to a game that has no bearing on the playoff picture.

The five-man panel at CBS Sports has released picks for Week 17, and three out of five experts expect the Bears to lose the season finale. Pete Prisco explained his prediction of a Bears in the following way:

The Bears season went right down the drain when Jay Cutler got hurt. What could have been? Now they are playing a meaningless division road game to close it. How motivated will they be? The Vikings are at home, which is why they are the pick — even without Adrian Peterson. Vikings 21, Bears 21.

It wouldn’t be the best thing for the Vikings in terms of 2012 NFL Draft position, but no doubt the players on the field would love to cap the season with a victory.

Must-see-TV? Losing Vikings vs. losing Redskins

Minnesota Vikings’ Jared Allen signals the crowd to cheer during the first quarter of the Minnesota Vikings game against the New Orleans Saints on December 18, 2011 at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. (Pioneer Press: Sherri LaRose-Chiglo) (Sherri LaRose-Chiglo)

WASHINGTON – Don’t touch that dial. There are oh-so-many suspense-filled reasons to tune in when the Minnesota Vikings and Washington Redskins go at it on Christmas Eve.

Can Rex Grossman get through an entire game without committing a turnover? Can Christian Ponder get through a game without getting sacked several times? Does an undrafted rookie have any chance whatsoever against Jared Allen?

Can the Vikings avoid their worst in-season losing streak since 1961, when they were an expansion franchise coached by Norm Van Brocklin? Can the Redskins avoid their worst home losing streak since 1994? How much more misery awaits the two clubs that swung and missed with an aging Donovan McNabb?

How many people will actually bother to show up for a Saturday holiday weekend game between two teams that have a combined five wins since the start of October?

“I don’t want to be part of that, the worst team in Vikings’ history,” Minnesota linebacker E.J Henderson said. “I’m sure it’s on some people’s minds, some guys’ minds. Whatever it takes to motivate you.”

See! There’s actual history on the line!

In all seriousness, motivation is a big deal when the Vikings (2-12) have lost six straight and are in danger of matching or sinking below the all-time worst Minnesota team that went 3-13 in 1984. And it’s a big deal when the Redskins (5-9), even though they’ve played better lately, are perilously close to extending a dubious franchise record by finishing last in their

division for the fourth straight year.

“The season didn’t go the way we thought it would, and everyone knows that,” said Washington fullback, tight end and all-around veteran voice Mike Sellers. “But no one’s going to give up. And no one’s going to sit there and let no team embarrass them. Just got to fight through it.”

Full credit goes to the Redskins for salvaging some pride after their own six-game losing streak. They’ve won two of their last four and put up a good fight in a seven-point loss to the New England Patriots. That said, Washington’s locker room had a definite last-day-of-school feel about it Thursday, with players collecting autographs from each other and talking about offseason plans.

“There’s a lot of distractions that go on this week with Christmas and the holidays,” coach Mike Shanahan said. “And you’ve really got to work with those distractions during a week like this. So hopefully our team’s focused and ready to go.”

The Vikings’ ship is less steady. The star players on both sides of the ball were publicly questioning their roles after last week’s 42-20 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Allen, who needs 5-1/2 sacks to break Michael Strahan’s single-season record, was on the bench during the Saints’ final possession and complained: “What are we resting me for? The playoffs?” Adrian Peterson, in his first game back from a sprained ankle, had just 10 rushes and wondered aloud: “I don’t know how to explain 10 carries. I was ready to roll. I just do my job.”

Later, after reviewing the game, tight end Visanthe Shiancoe said: “You could see some guys hung it up.”

None of which bodes well for Leslie Frazier, who claimed victory in his NFL head coaching debut in a November game at Washington last year and hasn’t won much since – and perhaps regrets not saying from the outset that this would be a rebuilding season.

“I really coming into the year thought we had some things in place to really push in our division, especially with the way the offseason had gone, knowing that there would be a lot of things unknown about this year,” Frazier said. “But as it has turned out, looking at where this team is and where other teams are in our division and around our league, we have a ways to go.”

There’s also been some debate as to whether Shanahan should have declared the Redskins to be in rebuilding mode during training camp. He has essentially conceded that to be the case, saying recently this was the year to stock the defense and next year the focus will be on adding talent to the offense.

Meanwhile, the real fun should be watching Allen. He has 17-1/2 sacks and is expected to spend much of the game against left tackle Willie Smith, who made his NFL debut just two weeks ago after Trent Williams was suspended for the rest of the season for violating the NFL’s drug policy.

Allen used to give Shanahan fits when the defensive end was with the Kansas City Chiefs and the coach was leading the Denver Broncos. During one game, Shanahan called for a play for the tight end to deck Allen with a crack-back block. There was only one problem – Allen came out of the game for that play.

“And so we just kill the guy that’s substituting for Allen,” Shanahan said, “and I look across the field and he’s pointing his finger at me and he is laughing as hard as he can. And I couldn’t help it, I started laughing myself. I saw him in Vegas that offseason and he looked at me and said, ‘Oh, that was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. You just killed my substitute. That could have been me.’”

Could there be a similar call in the Shanahan playbook on Saturday?

“Could be, could be,” the coach said.

Yet another reason to watch!

Week 15 NFL Power Rankings: Fox Sports Drops…

Read More: Jared Allen (DE – MIN), Joe Webb (QB – MIN), Christian Ponder (QB – MIN), Minnesota Vikings

It’s been a rough season for the Minnesota Vikings. They’re getting older on defense, star running back Adrian Peterson has been injured for a significant amount of time, they lost some good players in free agency and Donovan McNabb was really awful through the first five or six weeks of the season. Why the team placed their faith in him, nobody will ever know. Christian Ponder has been pretty good, but on Sunday, Joe Webb was even better. Still, he wasn’t good enough to get Minnesota the win.

Fox Sports drops the Vikings in their Week 15 NFL power rankings:

28. The Vikings received a nice offensive boost when backup QB Joe Webb entered the game, but don’t get down on rookie Christian Ponder just yet. Jared Allen added three more sacks to his league-leading 17 1/2 total, and now must average 1.6 per game to tie Michael Strahan’s NFL record of 22 1/2 in a single season.

That’s a two spot drop from last week’s at No. 26. Brian Billick is right, here – the Vikings shouldn’t give up on Ponder just because Webb had a good game. And yes – the most interesting thing by far will be whether or not Allen can break that sack record, it is, after all, a lost season.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

Things have certainly been interesting in Charlotte to start the ball game between the 1-6 Minnesota Vikings and the 2-5 Carolina Panthers.

The Vikings got a 78-yard kickoff return from Marcus Sherels to begin today’s festivities to set the Vikings up at the Carolina 27-yard line. However, a run by Adrian Peterson for no gain, an incomplete pass, and a sack of Christian Ponder left the Vikings to settle for a field goal try from Ryan Longwell. However, Longwell uncharacteristically missed the 45-yard attempt wide to the left, and the Vikings got no points out of what looked to be a promising drive.

On Carolina’s first offensive play, however, the Vikings got to Panthers’ rookie quarterback Cam Newton on a blitz, as E.J. Henderson smashed Newton and caused him to fumble. Jared Allen fell on the loose ball, and the Vikings were in business at the Carolina 16.

Percy Harvin did the work from there, as he lined up in the backfield twice and took two handoffs from Christian Ponder. The first carry went for six yards, and the second one was a 10-yard touchdown run for Harvin’s first offensive score of the season.

The Vikings just forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, but the Panthers fell on it to take over at their own 18-yard line.

With 12:26 left in the first quarter in Charlotte, the Minnesota Vikings lead the Carolina Panthers by a score of 7-0.

What do you guys think about this.

The Green Bay Packers were moving the ball again, but the Minnesota Vikings slowed them down just enough to keep them out of the end zone and force them to settle for three.

The Packers were at the Vikings’ 15-yard line, but Jared Allen’s second sack of the day pushed them back six yards to the 21. On third down, Aaron Rodgers thought he had hit an open Randall Cobb over the middle, but the pass bounced off of the rookie’s hands to the turf for an incompletion.

Mason Crosby then came in and hit a 39-yard field goal for the Packers, and the lead was cut to 14-10. After the play, a fight erupted on the field, and defensive end Brian Robison was flagged 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct. On the kickoff, Crosby put the ball through the end zone, and the Vikings will start out at their own 20.

With 4:55 remaining in the first half, the Minnesota Vikings lead the Green Bay Packers by a score of 14-10.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

The Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers have announced their inactive lists for this afternoon’s game. Those lists are as follows.

Green Bay

OT Chad Clifton
G Ray Dominguez
LB Robert Francois
LB Jamari Lattimore
DT Mike Neal
CB Sam Shields
LB Frank Zombo

Clifton is the big one for the Packers here, obviously. That means that either Brian Robison or Jared Allen will be going up against a backup tackle this afternoon, which gives a small boost to Minnesota’s relatively slim chances.

Minnesota

WR Bernard Berrian
CB Chris Cook
OT DeMarcus Love
DE De’Aundre Reed
S JaMarca Sanford
S John Sullivan
CB Antoine Winfield

Berrian is a surprise inactive, after his “breakout” game of five catches for 54 yards against the Bears last weekend. Speaking of “breakouts,” Cook is in jail. Sanford and Sullivan both have concussions, and Winfield is still battling a neck injury.

Those are your inactives for this afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. We’re about an hour or so from game time, and we’ll have all of your updates on the game right here. Or, you can check out the Game Thread at The Daily Norseman for the best in-game discussion of all the Vikings’ action.

Arizona Cardinals-Minnesota Vikings play of the…

by Paola Boivin – Oct. 9, 2011 08:03 PM
The Arizona Republic

The setup: The Cardinals had the ball and were trailing 14-0. It was second and 1 from the Cardinals 29-yard line. There was 8:22 remaining in the first quarter.

The situation: The game already had turned into a debacle with Minnesota scoring two quick touchdowns. The Cardinals hoped to get on the board quickly and swing the momentum in their favor.

The call: Quarterback Kevin Kolb was in the shotgun. He took the snap and quickly was sacked by Vikings defensive end Brian Robison for a loss of 7 yards. Kolb fumbled, and Minnesota’s Jared Allen recovered.

The impact: The Vikings took over possession with great field position at the Arizona 25. They scored five plays later to take a 21-0 lead.

The quote: “I’m as frustrated as I’ve ever been.” – Kolb

The Minnesota Vikings have had big halftime leads this season. In their first three games of 2011, they had halftime leads of 10, 17, and 20 points, only to see all of those games get chalked up as losses as part of an 0-4 start.

On Sunday afternoon, they had no such difficulties, tying a team record for points scored in the first quarter with 28 and going into the locker room against the Arizona Cardinals leading by a score of 28-3. The team held on in the second half behind a swarming defense and notched the team’s first victory of 2011 by a final score of 34-10 at the Metrodome.

The Vikings defense dominated the early going, forcing two early turnovers from the Cardinals. The first came when Everson Griffen deflected a pass from Cardinals’ quarterback Kevin Kolb that wound up in the hands of cornerback Asher Allen on Arizona’s third drive of the afternoon. The Vikings capitalized on that turnover one play later, when Peterson cruised in for his second touchdown of the afternoon to put the Vikings ahead by a score of 14-0.

On Arizona’s next drive, Brian Robison blew through the Cardinals’ offensive line and knocked the ball out of Kolb’s hand, with Jared Allen falling on the fumble for Minnesota. On the ensuing possession for Minnesota, Donovan McNabb took it in himself with a four-yard touchdown run to make the score 21-0. After forcing the Cardinals to punt on their next drive, Minnesota drove down the field again, and Peterson again found pay dirt after a 14-yard touchdown run to make the score 28-0. The 28 points in the first quarter tied the franchise record set on September 28, 1986 against the Green Bay Packers.

The Vikings went into the locker room at halftime with a 28-3 lead, and the Cardinals managed to cut it to 28-10 after a 2-yard touchdown run by Chris Wells. . .who you may know as “Beanie”. . .with about eight and a half minutes left in the third quarter. However, those would be the last points that Arizona would score on the afternoon, as the Vikings’ relentless defense kept pounding on Kolb and company. Vikings’ safety Jamarca Sanford got the first two interceptions of his NFL career, nearly returning the second one for a touchdown. Robison and Allen both collected two sacks each in this afternoon’s assault as well. The defensive performance was particularly impressive considering that the Vikings did it without all-everything cornerback Antoine Winfield, who sat out today’s game with a neck injury.

Minneapolis native Larry Fitzgerald had a relatively quiet game for Arizona, collecting just four catches for 66 yards on the afternoon.

The 24-point victory for the Viking means that, despite having a record of 1-4, the Vikings have outscored their opponents by a margin of 111-106 this season, making things even more frustrating for this team and their fans. Not every aspect of the game was pretty, as McNabb failed to complete 50% of his passes, completing just 10-of-21 attempts for 169 yards and a score.

The Vikings will make their first prime-time appearance of 2011 next week, as they will travel to Chicago to take on the Bears on Sunday Night Football.

Cardinals At Vikings: Fantasy Football Starters…

Read More: vikings football, minnesota vikings football, cardinals football, arizona cardinals football, cardinals at vikings, cardinals vs vikings, arizona at minnesota, arizona vs minnesota, vikings fantasy football, minnesota vikings fantasy football, cardinals fantasy football, arizona cardinals fantasy football, Kevin Kolb (QB – ARI), Jared Allen (DE – MIN), Antoine Winfield (CB – MIN), Adrian Peterson (RB – MIN), Brian Robison (DE – MIN), Joe Flacco (QB – BAL), Beanie Wells (RB – ARI), Percy Harvin (WR – MIN), Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals, Arizona Cardinals at Minnesota Vikings, Oct 9, 2011 12:00 PM CDT

This Sunday’s game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Arizona Cardinals does not feature a whole lot of fantasy football potential, aside from a couple of obvious options. Hopefully you’re not leaning too heavily on folks from either of these two teams to make a significant impact for your fantasy team.

Starting with the visiting Cardinals, Arizona has one of the few “no doubt” starters in fantasy football in wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald is one of the best receivers in football, and is currently eighth in the NFL in receiving yards with 361, including two 100-yard games already this season. He’s a guy you don’t worry about match-ups with. . .you play him regardless.

If you need an option at running back, Beanie Wells has been having a nice little season thus far. He is currently averaging 5.4 yards per carry, and has already found the end zone five times in 2011. He would be recommended more highly if the Vikings’ defense wasn’t so solid against the run, but if you need a #2 running back, you could have much worse options. Kevin Kolb hasn’t had a great season for the Cardinals, sporting a TD/INT ratio of 5 to 4 on the season so far, but the Vikings’ defense is fairly weak against the pass, and could be even more so with Antoine Winfield potentially on the sidelines. If your regular quarterback has a tough match-up or is on their bye week this week (for you Joe Flacco owners, in particular), Kolb could be a nice option for you.

On the Minnesota side, the one “no doubt” starter is Adrian Peterson, the NFC’s leading rusher and the #3 rusher in the NFL overall in terms of yardage. If you have Peterson and you’re not playing him every week, then you’re not doing things correctly.

With as awful as Minnesota’s offense has been, it’s tough to recommend anybody else. Percy Harvin could be a solid “flex” option, particularly if your league takes return yardage into account. It’s tough to recommend anyone else in the Minnesota offense, however, thanks to the struggles of Donovan McNabb. The Minnesota defense could be a good play, as their offensive tackles are weak, particularly right tackle Levi Brown, so Jared Allen and Brian Robison could be in the Arizona backfield all afternoon wreaking havoc on Kolb and company.

That’s all the news for today.
