Minnesota Vikings Injury Report, Week 17:…

Read More: Anthony Herrera (G – MIN), Asher Allen (CB – MIN), Jamarca Sanford (S – MIN), Chris Cook (CB – MIN), Christian Ponder (QB – MIN), Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings

This weekend’s game against the Chicago Bears doesn’t really mean that much for the Minnesota Vikings given the lack of postseason implications for the game, but it will be another chance for quarterback Christian Ponder to get reps as he tries to improve for the future.

After getting knocked out of last week’s game against the Washington Redskins, Ponder was active and participating in practice with the Vikings on Wednesday and coaches said earlier in the day that he’s expected to start against Chicago. That’s good news for the Vikings as they try to develop their 2011 first-round pick. Minnesota’s full injury report can be found here, but it’s shown below:

Full Participation

- QB Christian Ponder

- CB Asher Allen

Limited Participation

- S Jamarca Sanford

Did Not Participate

- OG Anthony Herrera

- CB Chris Cook

Ponder was the big name on Minnesota’s injury list for the week, so it’s good to hear that’s healthy and expected to play. Allen’s health is also some positive news, as the third-year cornerback has started eight times this season and shown some flashes of potential.

Bad year for Vikings gets worse with latest rash…

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — The Minnesota Vikings have been down all year. Now they’re even more depleted.

The transaction list released by the Vikings resembled a virtual white flag, with four key players placed on injured reserve with five games to go in a second straight dismal season. Two safeties, a wide receiver and the long snapper are out, joining two of their best three cornerbacks.

These are positions that lacked depth at the beginning of the year. But as tantalizing as securing that second overall draft pick for 2012 can be — assuming the winless Indianapolis Colts are on their way to locking up No. 1 — the Vikings (2-9) haven’t abandoned their goal of finishing the season with success.

The ultracompetitive nature of professional sports makes it nearly impossible for coaches and players to think that way, for one. The Vikings will face legitimate playoff contenders in four of their last five games, another motivating factor. Plus, there’s the fear of rushing a rookie into action too soon.

“If you don’t feel like he’s quite ready and you put him out there just for the sake of saying, ‘We want to look at him in a game,’ and now the kid fails or he jeopardizes someone else’s health because he wasn’t ready,” coach Leslie Frazier said, “then that’s not the wisest thing to do.”

Frazier said this week’s moves were not made because of the team’s record. Only long snapper Cullen Loeffler and wide receiver Michael Jenkins would have a chance to return if the Vikings were still in the race for a playoff spot. So they’ve been left with no choice but to elevate the status of a handful of young players.

Strong safety Tyrell Johnson, who started three games this season to fill in while Jamarca Sanford and Husain Abdullah were injured, tore the hamstring tendon away from the bone in his right leg. Frazier said Johnson will need six months to recover. He was scheduled to have surgery Wednesday.

Abdullah also is done for the year, due to lingering concussion symptoms. That means sixth-round draft pick Mistral Raymond will start at safety next to Sanford, with Jarrad Page now backing them up. Page was signed Tuesday after being let go recently by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Jenkins, who leads the team with three touchdown receptions and is second in catches and yards, has torn meniscus cartilage — Frazier didn’t say which knee — and will have surgery Thursday. His season-ending injury prompted the team to re-sign rookie Stephen Burton, a seventh-round draft pick who has been on and off the roster.

Thus, Greg Camarillo and Devin Aromashodu are the primary outside receivers, with the team’s preference to use star returner/receiver Percy Harvin in the slot and limit his snaps to decrease his injury risk. That’s not an ideal situation for quarterback Christian Ponder’s development.

“The guys that we’re going to have playing on Sunday are guys he’s familiar with. They still have the ability to make plays for him,” Frazier said. “You still want to make sure that you’re doing the right thing by our team and by Christian as well.”

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

Vikings Injury Report, Week 12: Adrian Peterson…

Read More: Visanthe Shiancoe (TE – MIN), Percy Harvin (WR – MIN), Christian Ponder (QB – MIN), Kyle Rudolph (TE – MIN), Atlanta Falcons, Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings may struggle to score against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 12. Not only is Adrian Peterson’s status still up in the air, much of the Vikings’ offense is banged up.

Peterson did not participate in practice on either Wednesday or Thursday, and is recovering from an ankle injury sustained against the Raiders in Week 11. But both Visanthe Shiancoe and and Kyle Rudolph have missed practice this week, and Christian Ponder and Percy Harvin have both been limited.

That’s not a good sign for a team that can struggle on offense even at peak health.

Here’s the full Vikings practice and injury report for Week 12.

DID NOT PARTICIPATE: Cornerback Chris Cook (not injury-related), safety Husain Abdullah (concussion), running back Adrian Peterson (ankle), tight end Visanthe Shiancoe (hamstring), tight end Kyle Rudolph (quadriceps).

LIMITED PARTICIPATION: Linebacker Erin Henderson (hamstring), guard Anthony Herrera (knee), quarterback Christian Ponder (knee), wide receiver Percy Harvin (ribs).

FULL PARTICIPATION: Defensive tackle Christian Ballard (hamstring), offensive tackle Charlie Johnson (Achilles), safety Jamarca Sanford (shoulder).

Vikings Vs. Panthers: Minnesota Injury Report Says…

Read More: Visanthe Shiancoe (TE – MIN), E.J. Henderson (LB – MIN), Anthony Herrera (G – MIN), Antoine Winfield (CB – MIN), Adrian Peterson (RB – MIN), Percy Harvin (WR – MIN), Jamarca Sanford (S – MIN), Minnesota Vikings, Carolina Panthers, Minnesota Vikings at Carolina Panthers, Oct 30, 2011 12:00 PM CDT

The Minnesota Vikings have been lucky they haven’t really had to deal with any offensive injuries as the unit has struggled while healthy this season. The team released its opening injury report for the game against the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday, however, and it included bad news for both Adrian Peterson and Percy Harvin, among others.

The Vikings had four players that couldn’t practice on Wednesday due to injury, which doesn’t sound all that terrible, except for the fact that three of the players that sat out are skill position starters on offense. Peterson was out with an ankle injury, Harvin missed due to the rib injury he suffered last week and tight end Visanthe Shiancoe didn’t practice because of a foot injury. Guard Anthony Herrera was the only other player not to practice due to injury concerns as he heals from a knee injury.

As far as other important players are concerned, linebacker E.J. Henderson was limited with a knee injury and Antoine Winfield the same with his neck injury. Defensive backfield members Hussain Abdullah and Jamarca Sanford both participated fully in practice despite appearing on the report.

The Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers have announced their inactive lists for this afternoon’s game. Those lists are as follows.

Green Bay

OT Chad Clifton
G Ray Dominguez
LB Robert Francois
LB Jamari Lattimore
DT Mike Neal
CB Sam Shields
LB Frank Zombo

Clifton is the big one for the Packers here, obviously. That means that either Brian Robison or Jared Allen will be going up against a backup tackle this afternoon, which gives a small boost to Minnesota’s relatively slim chances.

Minnesota

WR Bernard Berrian
CB Chris Cook
OT DeMarcus Love
DE De’Aundre Reed
S JaMarca Sanford
S John Sullivan
CB Antoine Winfield

Berrian is a surprise inactive, after his “breakout” game of five catches for 54 yards against the Bears last weekend. Speaking of “breakouts,” Cook is in jail. Sanford and Sullivan both have concussions, and Winfield is still battling a neck injury.

Those are your inactives for this afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. We’re about an hour or so from game time, and we’ll have all of your updates on the game right here. Or, you can check out the Game Thread at The Daily Norseman for the best in-game discussion of all the Vikings’ action.

Vikings’ Chris Cook arrested for domestic assault

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota Vikings cornerback Chris Cook was arrested early Saturday on domestic battery charges, and the team said Cook, who has started the past three games, will not play this weekend against the Green Bay Packers.

The 24-year-old Cook was arrested without incident after someone called 911 around 2 a.m. to report hearing people across the street yelling and screaming, Eden Prairie police spokeswoman Katie Beal said.

The second-year pro was booked on two charges, including one count of domestic assault, and was being held without bail Saturday at Hennepin County jail, according to online records. Prosecutors have 48 hours in which to charge Cook, who has a court hearing scheduled for Monday morning.

Bob Hagan, the Vikings’ spokesman, said Cook has been ruled out of Sunday’s game against unbeaten Green Bay. Earlier, the team issued a statement saying it didn’t plan to comment about the arrest until it could learn more about what happened.

“We take this matter very seriously and are still gathering all the details of the incident,” the Vikings said.

Earlier this year, Cook was accused of pulling a gun on a neighbor in his home state of Virginia. A judge found him not guilty of a misdemeanor count of brandishing a firearm, saying there was insufficient evidence to convict him.

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier had a talk with Cook in the offseason to reiterate the importance of staying out of trouble off the field, and the second-year player emerged as perhaps the most reliable cornerback on the field during the team’s 1-5 start. At 6-foot-2, he has the size to match up with taller receivers and the speed to keep up with smaller ones.

The loss of Cook for Sunday’s game against the pass-heavy Packers is a huge blow to the Vikings’ already depleted secondary. Cornerback Antoine Winfield is listed as doubtful with a neck injury and starting safety Jamarca Sanford likely is out with a concussion.

Cook has started in Winfield’s place over the last three games opposite Cedric Griffin, who has yet to return to his old form while coming off his second torn ACL in the last two years.

Without Cook, Asher Allen will likely step into the starting role with Marcus Sherels moving into the nickelback spot, giving the Vikings two of their top three cornerbacks under 5-foot-10. Rookie Brandon Burton also could be activated to provide some depth against Aaron Rodgers and the Packers, who run a wide-open passing attack that floods the secondary with receivers.

Even before the incident with Cook, Frazier said his short-handed secondary would be challenged against their undefeated division rivals.

“They do a lot of four- and five-wideout sets; more so than most teams that you play,” Frazier said on Friday. “You would like to have all hands on deck, but the guys that are going to play are going to be ready to go and we are going to need them to step up and play big for us.”

Cardinals At Vikings: Minnesota Crushes Arizona,…

The Minnesota Vikings have had big halftime leads this season. In their first three games of 2011, they had halftime leads of 10, 17, and 20 points, only to see all of those games get chalked up as losses as part of an 0-4 start.

On Sunday afternoon, they had no such difficulties, tying a team record for points scored in the first quarter with 28 and going into the locker room against the Arizona Cardinals leading by a score of 28-3. The team held on in the second half behind a swarming defense and notched the team’s first victory of 2011 by a final score of 34-10 at the Metrodome.

The Vikings defense dominated the early going, forcing two early turnovers from the Cardinals. The first came when Everson Griffen deflected a pass from Cardinals’ quarterback Kevin Kolb that wound up in the hands of cornerback Asher Allen on Arizona’s third drive of the afternoon. The Vikings capitalized on that turnover one play later, when Peterson cruised in for his second touchdown of the afternoon to put the Vikings ahead by a score of 14-0.

On Arizona’s next drive, Brian Robison blew through the Cardinals’ offensive line and knocked the ball out of Kolb’s hand, with Jared Allen falling on the fumble for Minnesota. On the ensuing possession for Minnesota, Donovan McNabb took it in himself with a four-yard touchdown run to make the score 21-0. After forcing the Cardinals to punt on their next drive, Minnesota drove down the field again, and Peterson again found pay dirt after a 14-yard touchdown run to make the score 28-0. The 28 points in the first quarter tied the franchise record set on September 28, 1986 against the Green Bay Packers.

The Vikings went into the locker room at halftime with a 28-3 lead, and the Cardinals managed to cut it to 28-10 after a 2-yard touchdown run by Chris Wells. . .who you may know as “Beanie”. . .with about eight and a half minutes left in the third quarter. However, those would be the last points that Arizona would score on the afternoon, as the Vikings’ relentless defense kept pounding on Kolb and company. Vikings’ safety Jamarca Sanford got the first two interceptions of his NFL career, nearly returning the second one for a touchdown. Robison and Allen both collected two sacks each in this afternoon’s assault as well. The defensive performance was particularly impressive considering that the Vikings did it without all-everything cornerback Antoine Winfield, who sat out today’s game with a neck injury.

Minneapolis native Larry Fitzgerald had a relatively quiet game for Arizona, collecting just four catches for 66 yards on the afternoon.

The 24-point victory for the Viking means that, despite having a record of 1-4, the Vikings have outscored their opponents by a margin of 111-106 this season, making things even more frustrating for this team and their fans. Not every aspect of the game was pretty, as McNabb failed to complete 50% of his passes, completing just 10-of-21 attempts for 169 yards and a score.

The Vikings will make their first prime-time appearance of 2011 next week, as they will travel to Chicago to take on the Bears on Sunday Night Football.

Both the Arizona Cardinals and the Minnesota Vikings have some injury concerns going into this one, including a couple of big names.

We’ll start with the injury report for the visiting Arizona Cardinals.

Hamstrings are the name of the game for the Cardinals, as that’s the issue with tight end Todd Heap, running back Beanie Wells, and wide receiver Early Doucet, according to our friends at SB Nation Arizona. Heap is said to be a game-time decision, while it would be surprising if either Wells or Doucet are deactivated for this one. In the event that Zastudil can’t handle the punting duties, Arizona has former Cardinals’ punter Ben Graham on standby.

Now, on to the Vikings, who have some injury issues of their own.

Winfield’s injury is a neck injury that he suffered in the Kansas City game, and his absence could present some huge problems for the Vikings on defense. He’s technically a “game-time decision” as well, but it would be surprising to see him out there on Sunday, from all accounts. Kluwe is also battling an injury, and the Vikings have brought in former Detroit Lions’ punter Nick Harris in case he can’t go. Then again, Kluwe has played through a torn ACL in the past, so it would be a surprise if he wasn’t playing this Sunday.

Antoine Winfield, John Sullivan do not practice…

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. – Minnesota Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield, centre John Sullivan and punter Chris Kluwe all missed practice Wednesday because of injuries.

Winfield has a neck injury suffered in the game Sunday against Kansas City. Sullivan missed a few plays in that game with an injured left ankle, but returned to finish it. Kluwe has an injured hamstring.

The status of all three players for Sunday’s game against Arizona is uncertain.

Four other Vikings were limited in practice Wednesday. Safety Husain Abdullah has a pelvis injury, linebacker E.J. Henderson and safety Jamarca Sanford have sore knees, and left tackle Charlie Johnson is nursing an injured elbow.

Vikings’ Johnson apologizes after DWI arrest

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Minnesota Vikings safety Tyrell Johnson is apologizing a day after he was arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired.

Johnson was arrested early Tuesday and authorities said his blood-alcohol level was 0.12 percent, above the state’s legal limit of 0.08 percent.

“I’m very blessed and fortunate that no one got hurt because of my mistake and selfishness,” he said.

Johnson said he was “genuinely sorry” for his actions. The team has a car service that players can call if they’ve been out on the town and are too impaired to drive, and Johnson said he regretted not making the call to use it or getting a hotel room.

“Just for advice to everybody else, whoever gets in that situation, it’s not worth it,” Johnson said. “You’ve got to make that call if you can’t drive home. Even if you think you’re good, you’re not good.”

Coach Leslie Frazier said Johnson will be in uniform for the game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday and that any discipline would be handled internally.

“It’s always disappointing when guys fall short in different areas, but I know things are going to happen,” Frazier said. “It does happen.”

Johnson is splitting time with Jamarca Sanford at strong safety. Sanford has started the first two games of the season, but Johnson has rotated in often and has been on the field more for passing downs, especially late in games.

Frazier said this is the first time he’s had any issues with Johnson, who was a second-round draft choice in 2008.

“Tyrell has been great,” Frazier said. “Really haven’t had any issues with him off the field or even on the field.”

Vikings’ Johnson arrested on DUI charge

By Brian Hall
FOXSportsNorth.com

MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota Vikings safety Tyrell Johnson was picked up early Tuesday on suspicion of driving while impaired.

Johnson, 26, whose full name is Marcellous Tyrell Johnson, was booked on fourth-degree DWI, according to Hennepin County jail records. He was admitted to the jail at 3:17 a.m. and released at 5:28 a.m.

The team, which lets its players have an off day on Tuesdays, released a statement, saying: “The Vikings are aware of last night’s incident involving Tyrell Johnson. At this time the team will withhold any further comment.”

Fourth-degree DWI is a misdemeanor in Minnesota, and the level of the charge means the offender has no prior DWI license revocations, agreed to take the required tests and had a blood-alcohol level below .20. The offense is punishable by up to 90 days in jail, a $1,000 fine and a license suspension of 90 days. Johnson’s court date is Nov. 1.

The Associated Press reported that the stop took place at about 2 a.m. after Johnson failed to signal to merge onto an interstate ramp while driving in Minneapolis. The trooper noticed Johnson had bloodshot, watery eyes and slurred speech and smelled of alcohol. The state patrol told AP that Johnson’s blood-alcohol level was 0.12 percent. The legal limit in Minnesota is 0.08 percent.

Johnson, who dropped a potential game-saving interception during the Vikings’ loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday, was a 2008 second-round pick out of Arkansas State. But he has largely fallen short of the expectations since being drafted 43rd overall. He started seven games as a rookie and 15 in his second season but has started only two since.

He was in competition with Jamarca Sanford for the starting strong safety spot during training camp but didn’t win the job. The two have remained in a rotation during the regular season, but Sanford has started the first two games. On Sunday, with Tampa Bay driving for the eventual game-winning touchdown, Johnson stepped in front of a pass at the goal line but couldn’t hold on to the ball and the Buccaneers scored three plays later.

It’s the second instance of drunk driving by a Vikings player this season. Fourth-string quarterback Rhett Bomar was arrested and charged with a DWI during training camp. Bomar continued practicing but didn’t participate in any preseason games and was eventually released in the first round of cuts.

There is the quick update of the day.
