On the same day Minnesota Vikings owner Zygi Wilf’s private plane was spotted at a Southern California airport Thursday comes this little nugget: NFL commissioner Roger Goodell recently met privately in Los Angeles with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to talk about, among other things, the NFL relocating to Los Angeles. The connection: The Vikings were dealt a major blow to their stadium efforts in Minnesota this week when the House Government Operations and Elections committee rejected by a 9-6 vote a proposal for a $975 million plan to raze and rebuild the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis

Unlike the Indianapolis Colts and Washington Redskins, the Minnesota Vikings aren’t deadest on whom to take with the third pick in the 2012 NFL Draft . The Vikings picked quarterback Christian Ponder with the 12 th pick in the 2011 draft, which would seemingly rule out Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannenhill, but everyone else seems to be a possibility. The Vikings could go with USC offensive tackle Matt Kalil to shore up a porous offensive line; or look to the defensive side of the NFL Draft in order to better a defense that finished 26 th against the pass in 2011

Written by The Sports Network (Sports Network) – After tying a franchise record for losses in a season in 2011, the Vikings head into a very important draft with 10 total picks and several areas in need of an upgrade. Chief among them is the left side of the offensive line, where longtime anchor Steve Hutchinson’s release creates a gaping hole at guard and tackle Charlie Johnson is coming off a rough year as young quarterback Christian Ponder’s blind-side protector. With the third overall selection, Minnesota is in perfect position to take the best left tackle prospect of this class, Southern California’s Matt Kalil, and kick Johnson inside, though general manager Rick Spielman has publicly acknowledged he’s open to trading down if a team meets his asking price.

Getty Images The team-by-team look at draft needs continues with consideration of a franchise that matched its all-time 16-game low-water mark in 2011, with three wins and 13 losses. Left tackle: The Vikings put up with a lot from Bryant McKinnie, because really good left tackles don’t fall out of the sky. (Except when cut by the Vikings after they can no longer put up with him.) With the team hoping 2011 first-rounder Christian Ponder can become a competent quarterback, the chances of Ponder maximizing his potential will be maximized if he isn’t running for his life. USC tackle Matt Kalil would give the Vikings a blind-side Ponder protector, who could man the position for a decade or longer. With the Vikings needing to win now, his ability to start right away is a significant bonus

Prior to the 2011 season, the Minnesota Vikings signed defensive tackle Remi Ayodele with the idea that he could fill the void that Pat Williams left behind. Instead, Ayodele turned out to be ineffective and a horrible fit for the Vikings ‘ defense. Despite his lackluster performance, it seemed like the Vikings were unwilling to sever ties after investing a large lump of cash in the former New Orleans Saints defensive lineman.
